We won't be sending you an e-mail. All threads are posted and replied to within the thread to keep others in the loop when they come looking for the same thing. It also helps everyone track progress, including you.
Now, tar.gz's are archives, like .zip in windows. You need to "untar" them, in ubuntu, right click on the archive, and extract. |
sudo apt-get install file-roller from the command line to install the binary package of file-roller. Then it should be installed.
|
after i unrar them what do i do??????????
please step by step |
On Ubuntu, the program already exists in the repositories. Just install it with your package manager. Look at my previous post for command line or use synaptic.
|
i am sorry but where do i find this package manager?
|
I don't have ubuntu handy, but it should be in the main menu somewhere. Try System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager

i found synaptic but how do i instal packages i downloaded?
|
What I'm trying to tell you is that file roller can be downloaded and installed with synaptic, you don't have to download it separately.
Generally speaking, you should use programs you can download and install with synaptic because they are prepackaged binary files tailored for your distribution. Now if you happen to find a program that is NOT in your distribution, then you download the source and compile it. But for most programs you won't need this. I bet if you use synaptic's search function, you'll find file roller in there. |
thanks aloooooot you have helpped me greatly

If you need help installing other things in ubuntu (like java, flashplayer, etc) check out this guide:
http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu Also google for "automatix ubuntu" and you'll find a program that automates some of this installation. |
