PLEASE can someone help me take Linux off my computer??
 

Hi I am Very New here and have quite a dilemma, I have 2 computers with Linux red hat 9 on them i want to take one off and install windows XP. For the life of me i cannot, i have tried everything i found that i could. The fdisk i followed like it was life! I am really getting frustrated and would greatly appreciate if someone can help me in DETAIL word for word as if i am 3 take this off my comp. I really need to use windows on the other one now. I will join your forum gladly i am sure when this is all said and done as i said i still have another with the Red hat 9 .They are both RedHat9......

Any help at all woud be great for real i mean it .....

Just pop in the Windows disk.

put in ur windows boot up disk then fdisk and delete all partitions then set new partition for dos and make active....probably as u have done already.
reboot ur pc with the boot up floppy still in and then format c:
u MUST restart after fdisk then format

I apologize if i seem a bit oh confused~ In response to the post 1 i did plop in windows it wouldnt take at all, no execute file at all just read me file only. Post 2 do you mean put windows XP cd in at the same time i put linux backup floppy in? Im sorry guys/gals i am cluesless i need a break, wish i could just figure the darn thing out but i cant. Sorry to keep buggin ya...

Put the Windows XP disk in the cdrom, and reboot the machine. If your BIOS is set to boot from cdrom, the windows startup will begin, and tell it to format the entire drive. Linux will be gone, and all that will be there is windows xp.

If you put the cd in, reboot, and linux starts again, then your bios needs to be changed to boot from cdrom. Bios is usually entered very early in startup by the delete key, or F1 F2 depending, just read the screen. Once in Bios, go to boot, and make sure cdrom is used before any of the hard drives. It may be under advanced CMOS, there are plenty of things it may be under, just get in BIOS and look for the boot order of devices.

if it won`t boot from the cd...then make a windows floppy boot up disk u can download a win98 boot up disk which will give u cd rom support from www.putergeek.com.
If u put the floppy in and reboot ur pc it will ask u if u want cd rom support (which of course u do) then when it has finished loading the floppy u will be left with an a: prompt type fdisk
then delete all partitions, then create new primary partition and then set partition active. then esc and reboot with the floppy still in the drive. when u get to the a: prompt type format c:
When u have formatted if ur windows xp disk is not a bootable cd then u can either use a friends pc to make 6 boot up floppys using ur winxp cd. Or the other option is to put a copy of win98/ME/ 2000 on ur pc and then use ur win xp cd to upgrade.

If you can not boot from the CD, you have to download a file from Microsoft to make 6 boot disks for either Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home. During the installation you can make and delete partitions.

Put in your Windows XP CD in. If its an upgrade CD, the installer will ask you to insert a previous Windows CD from Windows 98 to Windows 2000.

NEVER DO AN WINDOWS UPGRADE FROM AN ALREADY INSTALLED WINDOWS OS. ALWAYS FORMAT AND DO A FULL INSTALLATION.


BTW, do not come crying to us when Windows crashes multiple times a day.
