i would first try something like this:

ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom

and see if this works (leave fstab as is).

Already suggested in this same thread and attempted. No success.

no no. that was suggested before you made the changes to lilo.conf. The change was a crucial step in getting things to work again. What happened is that somehow lilo.conf got changed and lilo was run at some point which messed up a few settings.

Tried this again as suggested. Here are the results. No success again

bash-2.05b# rm /dev/cdrom
bash-2.05b# ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
bash-2.05b# mount /dev/cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device
bash-2.05b# ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrom
ln: `/dev/cdrom': File exists
bash-2.05b# rm /dev/cdrom
bash-2.05b# ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrom
bash-2.05b# mount /dev/cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device

ok. Please do the following. Delete /var/log/messages and then reboot. Then post the contents of /var/log/messages.

I know you did this before but since the boot settings have changed, the output will be different and hopefully it says where your cdrom is to be found under /dev
