playing video files in Red Hat 7.2
 

After installing Red Hat 7.2 i have tried to play with gtv a mpeg file. Gtv opens it, starts playing the mpeg file but the video is slower than the sound ( the sound is played at normal speed but the video at a much slower speed). My system : Pentium @ 166 Mhz non-MMX, 32 Megs of RAM, Intel TX Motherboard, HDD Wd 10,2 Gb, video card : ATi XL @ 8 Mb and as graphic interface i use BlackBox... Which is the solution?

Well, I have a very similar system (Cyrix 6x86 166MHz, also with 32Mb of RAM) and I have to say that, basically, the problem is the meagre system resources. Try installing XMMS -smpeg and using that to play video files (also -- and this is really key, I think -- use a window manager that won't eat up your system resources such as lackbox or Fluxbox, rather than a big fat SOB like KDE or GNOME).

with such an old computer (heh, sorry, i know home truths can hurt!) you'll not get full quality video files to play that well. I'd recommend you used a program like MPlayer, and then tell it to drop frames as required. my 64mb geforce card runs perfectly with any video file, but my 8mb sis 6326 card does noticably lag with video. by using

mplayer toy_story.avi -framedrop

as soon as it starts to lag, extra video scenes get thrown away. you can also do things such as reduce preprocessing before display and such to render frames faster.
