Playing music CD on Linux Notebook
Running RedHat 8.0 on a notebook.
The sound works well for the system sounds, but there is no sound when I try to play a music CD. Any ideas? Thanks. |
1: Have you got the volume turned up for your CD?
2: What are you using to play CDs? Have you got it setup to use the correct device? |
1. Yes, volumes are definately checked - on 1. notebook volume setting 2. kmix settings 3. actual cd playing software
2. I tried kscd and xmms. Loads the tracks ok and appears to be playing them, but there is just no sound. I checked the device in kscd and it was /dev/cdrom. I believe that is correct. |
Do you know if your laptop has a data cable going from the cd drive to the sound card? If not, you may be in a bit of a pickle!
|
It is an external TDK portable slim CD writer - connected to the notebook via USB.

Yeah, that sounds like a "pickle" to me then. You probably aren't going to be having a ton of luck then, at least not until the ability appears in a future kernel to read audio data that way.
Here's something you might wanna consider though... You could rip the audio CD to your HD into a temp directory, then listen to it, when you are finished, simply delete the files. When I use grip to do such a thing, it doesn't take very long to rip, maybe 15 minutes at most. This might be something to consider. Cool |
