playing mp3s and avi files

hi,

i'm quite new to linux...so need some help here
i'm using fedora core 4....
and i had install xmms using this command
'yum -y install xmms xmms-mp3'
and also installed codecs from here, 'www4.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/',
and i had mount my ntfs drive as well....

but i cant seem to be able to play my mp3 files and the avi files from the ntfs drive using the xmms or the totem movie player....
the error given was due to some patent issue....

so how do i solve this problem...

there is defintely nothing wrong with my soundcard as i'm able to play some music files using realplayer....

like you did for xmms, you need to use alternatively compiled versions of totem etc... if xmms still won't play them, then you did not actually install the xmms-mp3 package (it's in the livna repo).

this has been asked so so many times already, if you're still stuck, try searching this site
