I suggest a re-install. Start the thing with a live CD, or TTYLinux / Knoppix , mount the internal drive and (if possible) a USB stick to hold the data. Save (copy) everything to the stick - or try to go for an FTP server.

...in addition to what's been posted already (and I know I'm a bit late) please allow for proper investigation to precede re-installation if you have not pinpointed the point(s) of entry already (or face getting rooted again RSN), also do not backup everything: just those items which contents can be inspected and verified.
