pinkish rectangles on console programs

I have noticed that when ever I run Slackware installer-like programs (ncurses?)
there will be pinkish squares scattered randomly on the screen. Program performance is not really a problem, but it's just so annoying. What's causing these and how can I get rid of them?

I wish that were it, but I don't think it is.
I'm using the default fonts and It doesn't happen on my other computer with the same setup.
