Ping gateway using proxy

Hi,
I am accessing internet through Analog Proxy. ADSL modem has been connect to one of windows xp machine and by running Analog proxy, we uses internet by mentioning that machine's ip address. But how do i ping the default gateway in this case? Is it possible or not? If yes then please tell me how, because if i says # ping <anysite.com> it not pinging; its says host unreachable; means i will not be able to run wget too.

I am trying to ping from OEL 5.3. In one of google link; i read that :

Does PING work through the Proxy Server?

No, ping uses the ICMP protocol to communicate. Proxy only supports TCP and UDP packets. Ping will resolve the DNS name but go no further. For example:

D:\>ping www.microsoft.com
Pinging www.microsoft.com [207.68.137.36] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 157.58.96.1: Destination net unreachable.
Reply from 157.58.96.1: Destination net unreachable.

Please guide me.
Thanks.

"Guide you" to do what?? Did you read what you posted???

It says, in what you posted that ping WON'T WORK through the proxy server you're using. Add to that, the fact you're asking about Windows software, running on a Windows system, on LINUXquestions. What is the 'Linux' part of your question?

Guide for how do i ping my default gateway using proxy. But since now you too have confirmed that its not possible to ping default gateway through proxy computer.

My 'Linux' part of question is that "i will not able to get a configuration file using wget <http://.....>; if i am giving this command on a computer which is accessing internet through proxy server. It is right or wrong? If it is possible (wget using proxy), then please tell me how" ?

Ok...now you need to tell us what version/distro of Linux you're using, and how your Linux system is connected to the network. Chances are, it'll work fine....have you actually TRIED it? Did you get any errors, or can you just not ping (as per your software), and assume it'll not work?

C:\Documents and Settings\SUPER>
Machine 2: Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 IP Address of the machine is 192.168.0.12 and other related information has been configured by service-network-config for eth0. I am using internet perfectly with firefox no issue.

My question is:

Is it possible that from machine 2 i can ping to default gateway at shell prompt, i.e. # ping 192.168.1.1 ? I am giving but it is returning host unrechable. In my /etc/resolv.conf i have mentioned nameserver 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.16, but still same error.

So, just please confirm that it is not possible to ping default gateway using proxy server. If it is possible, then please let me know how.

Now you will ask me, but why are you need to ping default gateway?

I think if i am not able to ping default gateway or ping www.anysite.com; i will fail to run wget http://mysite.com.myfile.repo. Actually, at the last i am going to get a configuration file from a site; which needs to run wget command.

Please let me know, if i am unclear in my question and/or more details require regarding question

Thanks and Regards

Again, are you not paying attention???

You obviously CANNONT PING, based on what YOU POSTED. Your proxy server software doesn't support it, period, that's all. That's Windows software...if you need support for it, go to a Windows forum, or contact the vendor.

And ICMP/PING packets have nothing to do with ANY other protocol, and again, HAVE YOU ACTUALLY TRIED IT??? If you can get out with a web browser, you can VERY OBVIOUSLY get out with wget.

You are posting the same thing, over and over, and are obviously not paying attention to what you're writing, or thinking about it. You're also not paying attention to what folks are telling you.
