pidgin IRC direct message to a user

Hi all,

I always use IRC as a quick way for getting help. But I notice that when people message me in a channel the message itself show up in the channel, but I also get notified from pidgin that I got a message.

Now my question is, how do I send a message to a specific user so he gets notified like I do, but still the message show up in the channel.

I know It's not Linux specific question, but IRC is in Linux culture anyway, and I been googling but for no solution at the end.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, the only choices you have are the ones listed, e.g. here. Exactly what effects it causes on the other person's computer (notifications, new window, etc.) will be controlled by his client. The showing up in the channel is different - but I think all the commands such as '/msg' and '/notice' that you will find are private, so won't show up in the channel.

In summary: If I've understood you correctly, I don't think you can - it will depend what software (both IRC client and things like libnotify) your friend has on their computer.

Start your messsage with person's nick (the example assumes the nick is "Someone"):
Code:
Someone, I hope that you notice that message
If the person in questions wants the IRC client to monitor personally directed messages in channels, the conventional trigger is mentioning the nickname.

Hi all,

Thanks a lot. I was always doing that so the one Am messaging know the message is directed to em, but I never knew It's triggering anything

And since am usually using IRC for Linux related stuff so I guess people will notice ;-)
