Picking a new distro

I know theres plenty of noobs asking what distro they should use. Im only asking here because it isn't as simple as it seems, I have been using Fedora Core 6 which went wrong.

Im looking for a OS that is similar to FC6 and has all of theseMight even install FC6 again)
- Use's Gnome
- The 3D Cube effect and wobbling windows... I don't require berly, Berly went wrong and it is slightly buggy.
- Easy to install IPW3945, Terratec Cinergy Hybird T USB XS and a Creative Sound Blaster Live External
- Doesn't drain my laptop battery...

I don't require a simple distro, im willing to learn

Also I am using Linux more than Windows by far. Would It be better to install linux on the first partition on my hardrive and windows on the last?

The reason for looking for another distro is that FC6 stopped working how I wanted it twice now. I really loved FC6, first time it was my fault (Acsidently uninstalled GNOME) and this time the edge around the window (With the exit / minimize / maximize buttons) dissapered, a few days later I installed berly got it back, worked fine. I loved berly but then that wouldn't start only would work with compiz. So I reinstalled. Didn't make any difference so I tried to reinsall xorg that didnt work and now X won't start proberly... That why im looking for a new distro...

If you have liked FC6 even though it didnt work so good then I will suggest you to try FC5 once, don't know about 3D cube but rest should be just fine
The added advantage will be that software can be selectively upgraded to provide best of FC5 & FC6

Knoppix liveCD is also good, one can save the configuration(persistant system image) on disk and keep using the CD so that network etc dont have to be configured again & again

Gnome is possible to get going in Fedora. You just need to add the packages and if you don't want KDE you need to remove the related packages for that. Depending on how much you've added to your system it may be easier to do a fresh install, but definitely isn't required. For the 3d effects, I think the only options are using either beryl or compiz. I have beryl set up in ubuntu and haven't had any major problems, though I think it may be slightly buggy regardless of distro just since it's still kind of new. Can't say much about your third issue. Laptop battery shouldn't be affected by the distro you use.
