Picking a Desktop System
 

Hi I am looking for opinions on the best Linux Desktop system. So far I have tried CentOS, Ubuntu, and slackware. What is the best Desktop system you would recomend?

Hard to tell, there's no such thing as a "best" Desktop system. Virtually any mainstream distribution is good for the desktop, some just have certain advantages over others. What are you looking for exactly in a desktop system? Are you looking for ease of maintenance and a comfy package management? Ubuntu is for you. Do you want rock-solid stability and security? Slackware or Debian is the way to go. Do you want superior customizability? Gentoo is your choice.

My advice is: Try as much as you can (and your time will allow), pick one, learn it well and make it to your own personal "best" system. Good luck!

There is only one way to find that out .
Download a couple of Live CDs and try it out.
No one can tell what is the best for you

What's the "best car", lawnmower, house, boat, bicycle ... .. .
It's a personal choice.
It depends on your needs, preferences and habits, but not in the case of linux, $

Keep testing until you find something you can happily live with. (Maybe divorce in a year or two, it's only an OS).

That is why I was asking for an Opinion of what people use. I have been using linux as a web server etc now that I am trying to use it as a desktop it is totaly diffent and taking some getting used to. I installed slackware last night. The install was differnt I must say. Spoild by Ubuntu and Centos Installs. I seem to like the KDE Desktop better to. But yes I want something stable. The dist I want to learn is one that teaches me more about Linux. For example. If I learn Ubuntu then it Ubuntu I learn about with slackware you are learning more on linux. But yes I want a stable system.

But thanks for all the replies. I think I might just learn Slackware. Atleast it has a since of humor and telling me jokes about a car wreck etc when I log in. I got a kick out of that.

at the moment I'm sitting in front of my new installed Gentoo. I am running it as a desktop-system with KDE and Open-Office. I've started with Gentoo about four weeks ago, after 15 years with Slackware. Both distributions are very good for a desktop-system. Gentoo is more difficult to install than Slackware but also Gentoo is an excellently documented distribution.

Slackware is a good development platform right. I was actually going to try and build my own linux dist just for experience. So I can Learn more of the heart of linux.

While reading this thread I was wondering, Is there a Live CD for slackware?

no, there is none.
There is slax, a small distribution which can boot from CD or USB, but is not meant to be installed. slax is based on Slackware.
Also there is a live-CD of Bluewhite64, which is a 64bit Slackware-based distribution.

closest thing to livecd for slackware is slax-6.1.2, goblinX, wolvix and moolux
moolux is slax on steroids!

and, moolux, goblinX, and wolvix have hd installers and usb installers too
