Phone Service or Modem?

Hi all,

I just switched from Verizon phone service to Cavlier (not my choice). Now, for some reason I am constantly getting "NO CARRIER" error, when I try to connect. I get on occasionally, some days better than others. I naver had this problem before I switched. I am wondering if this has something to do with the integrity of the phone lines my new telephone service uses or if there is now something wrong with my modem that conveniently happened just as I switched phone service to play games with my head (lol). Does anyone have any suggestions or tests I could try?

I am running Red Hat 9 and have a US Robotics PCI modem.

Thanks :)

Bill

Most likely not your modem... Have you tried other local POP's (numbers), Also when you do connect does it stay connected? did you have any special Initializtion strings for you USR to connect before? try adding a couple of commas after the number to add a delay...

This might help...

Hi there, kencaz : )

Yea, I tried adding commas when i first encoutered the problem, but to no avail. I didn't have any init strings in before, everything is basically the same as it was before we switched to Cavalier. It seems to only pose a problem in the middle of the day and sometimes morning, and sometimes at night. I was wondering, since Cavalier is a smaller company (at least around here) if all the "good, quality" lines are in use becase they are first in the trunk search order and I am trying to connect on there lower integrity lines. I dont know a whole lot about phone systems, but I thought this made sense. Maybe you can suggest some init strings to counter this problem?

Thanks again :) :) :)

It would be kinda difficult to give you an init string from here that would work for your modem and ISP. They would probably know best for there particular modem and whatever modems they are using on there server.

Since your staying connected once you do get online is a good sign that its not a static issue. What is your connection speed? or your D/L cps rate?

I really think that if this started after switching phone services there may not be much you can do on your end... I would say keep hounding your ISP...!
