Permissions, usr directory, acrobat installation.
 

As a long time computer user and someone who love to get rid of his dependency on Mr Gates' offerings, I have installed Madrake 8.1, the easiest OS installation I've ever done. :-)

Email and internet access was a doddle, but I've had real problems installing Adobe Acrobat, which is an essential tool of my trade. The installtion demands that you create a directory within the usr directory. However, I'm not allowed to do so. I suspect it's something to do with my user rights. Would that make sense?

If that is the case, do I have log on as root and change the directory rights of usr, or can I do it by going to console and logging on as a superuser?

Finally, if one of my above guesses is right, how do I change the rights? chmod?

you have to be root to fiddle with the /usr tree, or another superuser if you made one. you should ALWAYS be superuser when installing programs, it's th way it's done...

so, 'su' and then create the directory, you shouldn
't change the access rights on /usr etc... only root should have full access ever
