Permissions problems in directories not in user home directory.

I have two users, tommy and max, which both belong to the group 'music' .

Created a directory named 'guidt' in /usr/local/share.

chown :music /usr/local/share/guidt to change the group ownership to the group 'music' .

chmod 775 /usr/local/share/guidt to allow group owners write access to the 'guidt' directory.

After doing the above steps, while logged in as tommy, I cannot create new directories or files in the guidt directory.

Why is this so ?

What are the permissions of guidt's parent directory?

Was "tommy" just recently added to the "music" group? He may just have to log out and back in again to gain that credential.

Hey it seems to work after a full restart of my linux VM. Mysterious.. So group policies do not take effect immediately ?

That's correct. You don't need to reboot entirely though, usually the user can just log out and back in.

The credentials of a login shell are set when that process is started at login time. Child processes, except for SUID or SGID executables, just inherit the credentials of the parent. There are some privileged commands, like newgrp, that can spawn a process with new credentials, but otherwise, what gets set at login time is there for the whole session.
