Question Permissions on ubuntu 9.10

i cannot delete or copy files on my extended fat32 partition. I mount it manually on /media/vfat. I tried the following:-

# sudo chmod -R 777 /media/vfat

but nothing happens

then i tried:-
# sudo chmod -R -c /media/vfat

then i got big list of files e.g:-

"mode of <filename> changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)"

But still i cant create files or delete files.

Do you have the default mount options set up to mount as read-only?
