Easy way to find out is to discover which groups you belong to:

$ groups

Certainly more than one.

To add a user to a group (must be root):

# gpasswd -a user group

Your specific case ("backup" must be a user for this to work):

# gpasswd -a backup photo

And yes, it's generally better to add a user to a new group than to open up directory access to all.
