Permissions??

Sorry this is gonna be a stupid question. I usually dont use Red Hat, but I decided to switch to it insted of SUSE.

I now using RedHAt 9 and every time I try to install anything on root or normail user, i get... premession denied in the terminal...

Where are the permissions or something so I can get full control?...

thanks

you get permission denied even as root? can you copy and paste the exact commands and output from the terminal?

did you check the INSTALL file that came with it? what version did you download?
from the install file:
Quote:

The simplest way to compile this package is:

1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type
`./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're
using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type
`sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute
`configure' itself.

Running `configure' takes awhile. While running, it prints some
messages telling which features it is checking for.

2. Type `make' to compile the package.

3. Optionally, type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with
the package.

4. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
documentation.

5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
source code directory by typing `make clean'. To also remove the
files that `configure' created (so you can compile the package for
a different kind of computer), type `make distclean'. There is
also a `make maintainer-clean' target, but that is intended mainly
for the package's developers. If you use it, you may have to get
all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came
with the distribution.
also, were you looking for 'cd'? the 'change directory' command? type 'man cd' or 'man anyCommand' to see the manual page for that command.

ok i installed the package, boy do i feel smart, now finding where it installed too is another issue ill figure that out myself... one more questions, how do i give a normal user installation permissions? on redhat 9

edit..

Usually manually compiled packages are installed in /usr/local. Try to run your program by calling its name, just type first letters and press tab to view matching names.

P.S. Why did u switch to such an old distro? Fedora Core 5 is the newest from Redhat/fedora tree.

Bear in mind that the permissions of the directory determine if new files can be created or removed there.
