Permission Denied Issue (concerning IMAP)
 

Hi all,

Just as a short intro, I'm not a sysadmin. I can get my way around *nix systems fairly well and have done a lot of development work with *nix systems. However, I've been thrust into a position where I now also have to support some *nix systems (due to a manpower shortage), in this case a VM Linux box.

Here's the issue: We're running UW IMAP, and I've noticed that it's not picking up any of the users' folders, and users cannot create new folders. When I log into the system as one of the users, it says it cannot chdir to the home directory of the user (where the mail folders are stored); it gives a "permission denied" error. Now, I've checked the actual home directory. I logged in as root, changed the directory's permissions to 777, and ensured that the directory's owner is the user that's trying to access it. After doing that, I re-logged in as the user and tried again. I still get the error.

I'm at a loss as to why a directory with full permissions and the correct owner would do this. Can anyone help? Again, I apologize if this is a real "noob"-ish type question. Thanks again for any help anyone can render!

Thanks for the link. I've actually been there like a million times to check it out, but, I don't think it's a problem with IMAP, so much just some weird permissions thing. But I can't be totally sure, and the support for UW IMAP hasn't helped my problem much at all. I've tried various suggestions from there, but to no avail.
