Periodic ticking sound in GNOME that doesn't stop unless I mute.

EDIT: The sound is no longer periodic, and is random. I just noticed something that looked like a notification (like the windows notifications at the taskbar) from the battery icon and now my screen becomes black randomly and then comes back like the backlight has been turned off, and then on. I unchecked the sounds option from the preferences and the sound has stopped, but how am I expected to read notifications that appear for an instant? I can barely get a glimpse at "access forbidden"

I suspect the power management of GNOME has something to do with this. My computer's battery is spoiled so it alternates between periods of charging and discharging as it charges. The period is usually a second. I have confirmed that the time of notifications coincides with the moments the battery changes state from charging and discharging by making the brightness of the laptop different when it is on power and when it is not. Apart from replacing the battery (or maybe adapter), how do I proceed?

Greetingz!

Regarding your initial problem;

Does the sound only occur when you move your mouse? I've had a few Dells (even laptops from Dell) do that. Usually it's been with a wired mouse (USB or PS/2). Oddly enough, it also happened when a AM/FM radio was on nearby.

As for your dead battery; if you're in the habit of keeping the system plugged in, just remove the battery.
Again, I have two laptops that now live as servers, and their batteries went kaput years ago, so out they went.

Yes, that fixed the issue thank you. It was related to the power management. As you can see in the edited first post. I don't face the problem when the battery is fully charged.
