You do realize what you're asking, right??

In order for a key to be 'programmed', that means the computer already has to be up and running i.e. powered on. Only then will the OS load, and then load any programmable keys.

You don't say what KIND of HP notebook, but I'm guessing it can be done, so that when you're computer is already on, another key will act just like the power button. The power button is typically a 'special' function key that the OS'es don't have any access to. Best bet would be to call HP and get it repaired.

Look in BIOS for option to power on the computer on keyboard input.

platolq82 01-27-2011 08:22 AM

Perceptor

I wish I knew how to look in the BIOS!
But I do not?

The computer is up and running, the power buttons works! I just want a back up key to turn on the computer, in case the ribbon falls out for the 11th time!

i am guessing it can be done as well?

i am just not smart enough presently to do?

that is why I ask the question?

Well, again if you know what you're asking, then you'd also know that it can't be done, for the reasons I outlined in my first response. Pay attention: if the computer is not up and running, then there is NO WAY ANY PROGRAMS ARE RUNNING, that can map a key to do ANYTHING.

Perceptor hit it on the head with going into BIOS, and enabling some sort of wake-up on key press, but even that will only work if the computer is suspended/hibernated, not powered off. Again, if your hardware is broken, then FIX YOUR HARDWARE.

you must of got tbone at an intersection?

you are the one that is assume the computer is not up and running!

it is running just fine!

the power button is working just fine!

to reiterate again, i just want a key to turn on my computer in the event that the ribbon falls out of the gate!

try not to read into the question what was not presented!

but thanks for your post!

but your of no help, pay attention to the question ask; do not assume things that are not presented

i fixed the hardware the computer is running fine, only in your own mind, is the computer not running! Mechanically i am very capable, programming not so good, but willing to learn!

Again the computer in running fine!

Yes, I know it's running fine...again, you don't seem to be paying attention. In your posts you say:

Sure seems to be saying you've got broken hardware, since you're saying you've got buttons/ribbons slipping out of your computer, and saying you need a backup key to turn the computer on, if it falls out. And again, if the computer is not powered up and running, no matter WHAT software/OS you're running, you can't program a key to do anything. Again, only if the key is set up in BIOS, and only if the computer is suspended/hibernated (NOT powered off), will this work.

So which is it? Do you have bits falling out of your laptop (as you've said twice), or not?

Then do you mind explaining what you mean by "ribbon falls out of the gate"??? And if your laptop is in perfect condition, why do you need a backup power button?

platolq82 01-28-2011 12:25 AM

tbone

clearly this is too complicated for you!

i did push the button for perceptor!

i am not having a hardware problem, my computer is running just fine, if the ribbon falls out of the gate then i can not turn on my computer, but if i have a key programed to turn it on, then i can!

that was my question!

perceptor got it, i guess that is why he is perceptor, he is perceptive as well, you are not!

my computer is running fine; still! ... i hope the ribbon does not fall out of the gate! .... platolq82

MTK358 01-28-2011 04:59 AM

"Up ad running" means "currently turned on", not "not broken"!!!

We are not saying the computer is broken, we are saying it's turned off!

When it's turned off, not broken, there's no program running at all that can possibly detect keystrokes.

platolq82 01-28-2011 09:28 AM

yeah

thank you mtk358!

i just want to know if i can turn in on! is the only way i can turn it on the power button!

i am working to try to understand the bios? and if there is some other way to turn it on, in the event the ribbon slims out of the gate!

now it works perfectly! the computer is not actually mine, belongs to a 74 year old lady, that is intelligent enough, and open minded enough, to realized that she can live without Bill, and Bill's os updates!

but she drop her computer, and it was tough to repair, but i installed a new hard drive and fix the ribbon going to the start up button, which is held in place by a gate, a gate that is suspect. then the key board, lays on top of the gate and screws pull in down and it should stay in place! but it works loose and then i can not power on! so i have to remove the keyboard, put the ribbon back, push the gate down, reinstall the keyboard!

lately no problems!

but if there was a way to turn the computer on without, the power button, that is what i was wondering, that was the purpose for my question!

i think perceptor gave me an answer!

at least pointed me in the right direction!

and maybe it can not be done!

but the computer is running find, and i would not say it is broken! not now any way!

No, it can't be done, period, as we've been telling you. Again, since you are STILL missing the point, what perceptor told you (and both mtk358 and I have agreed with), is that you can only set a key in BIOS to WAKE the computer if it's suspended/hibernated...NOT IF ITS POWERED OFF. If it's powered off, it's not running. Not running means that NO PROGRAMS ARE RUNNING....if no programs are running, ANYTHING you use to program a key will NOT WORK.

Again, re-read what we've told you...if the computer is OFF, it doesn't run programs...so whatever you use to program a key won't work. Again, perceptor told you you can program a key to wake the computer, not turn it on, but you're still missing THAT too....
