Pentium 4 vs. i686

I'm trying to optimize my code usings CFLAGS. Is i686 the same thing as pentium 4? What would I name a package that was optimized for a pentium 4? Thanks.

Thank you, easy enough.

What's the numbering scheme then?

I was just thinking about this today. If a Pentium was a 586, and a P4 is a 686, how do the P2 and P3 get numbered? I run Linux on a P3 and I'm not sure if it also counts as a 686.

P2 and later are all 686.
