PCLinuxOS new user

hello, i have recently installed pclinuxos on my pc and dont know how to run the file types file.exe.

i need urgent help please.

i am a beginner and not know much about linux.

looking froward to see your hepl, thamk you

Simon Bridge 07-11-2007 06:38 PM

That's easy... you cannot run any file type file.exe. That is because those are windows/DOS executables. You need to find linux programs to do what those exe files do and run those.

PCLinuxOS comes with a very large amount of executable software. Perhaps if you say what you want to do, we can help.

An *.exe file is a windows file. You will not be able to use these files in linux...sorry

What is it that your are trying to install?

salover 07-11-2007 06:52 PM

thank you for the quick help, i am trying to run pal_install_r17708.exe, which is the platalk program. when i double click on this file it drops the openwith list , and there are several options, i don't know which one to use for opening the file.

i appreciate yuor help.

AceofSpades19 07-11-2007 07:18 PM

you need wine to run it

salover 07-11-2007 07:21 PM

i also have problems playing some video files on some of my cds, i hsve tried some of the players that are coming with the system but they only play the sound not the pictures imean you can only hear the voices but can'`t see any thing.

gratefully i need your help.

AceofSpades19 07-11-2007 07:28 PM

you need codecs

salover 07-11-2007 07:40 PM

yes, that is right but don't where to get the codec?

if you know please post the link here and i will be thankful.

cheeers

jkillah1 07-11-2007 08:28 PM

lol, seems your just as confused as I am...

Linux is designed for people who already know how to use it... which makes me wonder how people ever learned how to use it in the first place!

Good luck understanding what anyone tells you lol

Sorry to sound so rude, but I'm really getting fed up with trying to learn this when everyone assumes that I already know what I'm doing! oh, just type in sudo blah blah -blah (ok, so where do I type this in? :D )

AceofSpades19 actually answered all your questions (like usual), but didn't specify very well for newbies. In PCLinuxOS, you have the synaptic package manager, it may not be that great, but its there...do a search for "wine" and for "codecs". Safest thing to do is install all your codecs available.

You may want to consider going to a Debian-based system (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, gNewSense, etc), or even Debian itself (later in your "Linux life") because over 300,000 packages can be made available to you.

The distros to avoid at this point would be Slackware, Debian, and Gentoo, all of which take a certain amount of understanding and setting up, and all are rated the most stable around.

Debian is relatively easier to install IMHO, and I am willing to help anyone through some simple steps, but that is up to you. Send me a msg if you like...

I try to get newbies to figure stuff out for themselves so they learn more, I know sometimes I could be a bit more specific but I would rather them learn a bit then me doing everything for them

As people have already pointed out, you cannot run .exe files in Linux--except maybe with WINE. If WINE is not already installed, you can install it with the package manager (Synaptic).

Once WINE is installed, you MIGHT be able to run your file by simply entering "wine pal_install_r17708.exe". Note that not all Windows stuff will run with WINE, but it's worth a try.

Sorry, but wrong
Linux is designed for anyone that wants an alternative to the mainstream operating system, and does not mind putting in bit of effort.
You attitude is uneccessarily negative and falls into what I call a "self-fullfiling prophecy". i.e.: If you say (or think), that you cannot do something, then in fact you can't.

It's normally much better to discuss specific issues, including specific points that you don't understand.

Yea, sorry. I'm just mad that I can't get my stupid Wi-Fi card to work, and all of the explanations on how to do it are way to complicated for me to figure out. Moving my computer to plug into Ethernet is not an option! I hear about ndiswrapper, sudo, and editing files, but I don't know how to do that stuff lol. Plus I don't know any Linux gurus...

Whatever, I don't know what I'm gonna do. Maybe I'll have to *shudder* switch to Macs
