PCLinuxOS MATE 2014. Problem with Thunderbird

Hello to all
I've just registered today and hopefully can get advice on the problem I have with Thunderbird.

My OS is PCLinuxOS running MATE 2014 ui installed on a 16gb usb stick. Everything works fine except Thunderbird. What happens is that with the inbox on screen when I move the mouse over the text (vertically up and down) the characters in each line of the inbox on screen become corrupt as I scroll over them. The underlying text doesn't actually get corrupted as a refresh of the screen puts everything back to normal. The mail server (1and1.co.uk) doesn't get corrupted either.

I have ubuntu 12.10 and Thunderbird installed on another 16gb usb stick and when I do the same thing on that, there are no problems.

In case it was some kind of virus I unloaded java runtime. I also did a clamav scan. It did seem go away initially but then returned.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

It could be a mis-match between the versions of Thunderbird and GTK: I had something like that recently in a KDE distro where I was running a GTK desktop. Try launching Thunderbird from a terminal and see what warnings are left behind. If that's the case, you'll just have to wait for an update.

See if you can launch `thunderbird` from a terminal. Hover over the "Inbox" and see if any errors or warnings output in the terminal.

Thanks for the reply's.

After posting my message above something else showed up. Corruption started appearing on web page images, in the form of horizontal bars a bit like when an older type television when it loses the signal synchronization. So it would appear that the problem isn't just Thunderbird.

I did try running from a terminal but I didn't get any errors. The trouble with this fault is that it isn't there all the time. I have now completely reinstalled PCLinuxOS to the USB and will monitor the situation.

You mentioned GTK. Maybe Xwindows is getting corrupted temporarily.

Thanks once again but I think I'll leave it for now as it's just an annoyance. The rest of PCLinuxOS is great and very stable.

I thought I'd add an image of the Thunderbird corruption for the record..

After a refresh the corruption goes away.

I'll leave it at that
