PCLinuxOS 2007....what the ?!&^#@!
 

Maybe it's my noobness that allows the answer to this escape me, but...

PCLinuxOS is based off Mandriva; I got that. I have the latest version of Mandriva and PCLinuxOS 2007 - Mandriva boots up, installs without issue, and works fine except for some soundcard issues - PCLinuxOS 2007 (which is what I want to install as my main OS) refuses to boot. The error comes during the black text portion of bootup and it fails to see my 2 SATA drives plugged into my Intel Media motherboard. The error message..."No IDE channels found." and drops me to a limited shell with a prompt. I've used this same CD to live boot and install elsewhere. Could it be the kernel version? How does one "remaster" a LiveCD like PCLOS 2007 elsewhere with a newer kernel embedded? I'm thinking that's what is needed here. I want to use PCLOS. At this point, Ubuntu 7.10 is the only distro that I've installed that just installs "and works" without my having to do anything else other than add needed codecs. Please don't take the references as my being schooled nor an advanced user, I'm only regurgitating what I've read that others have done elsewhere thinking I may need to do the same. I could be on the wrong path to resolution altogether.

I've put PCLOS on 2 different SATA systems with no issues. Is it a fairly new MOBO? (I wonder if there is some driver missing/not working).

I just saw a note somewhere that PCLOS was about to release an updated version. (the mod date now is may 2007, so that obviously has not happened)

You might try a Google search with "linux" and the description of your MOBO

The mobo is new_to me; I don't know about whether it's new or not in the grand scheme of hardware release vs kernel compatibility. I'm guessing it's pretty new. I just rebuilt the system a month ago, but that's not saying how long this mobo has been in production. What was confusing is that Mandriva will LiveBoot just fine, yet PCLinuxOS won't and it's based off Mandriva. My DVD/CD drive is IDE and my hdd's are both SATA. It seems more like it's a kernel issue. I'd run Mandriva but during bootup everything (microphone and speakers) both turn on and there is wicked feedback. Most suggestions just said to mute the mic, which might stop the feedback, but doesn't cure what's kicking it on the first place - and leaves me without being able to voice/video chat with my family. Anyways, back to PCLOS - maybe the mobo is newer than this version of PCLOS is capable of....dunno.

I've had problems with PCLOS finding anything behind a jmicron chip. In my case this meant S-ATA; IDE was handled by a different chip.
Newer kernels have this support.

It's certainly possible your hardware just isn't supported yet.

True, could be unsupported. I poked around some and see that PCLinuxOS was released with the 2.6.18 kernel versus the latest Mandriva being released with kernel 2.6.22. I don't have the next release date for PCLOS burned in memory, but hopefully something comes out soon. I'd like to see how it scoots along with this updated hardware. ;)

Appreciate the replies. In the meantime I get to mess around with more distros. I let MINT 4.0 boot up and it did well. Nice looking. I'd like to see that one continue, and I just installed Fedora 8 on another partition - but wanted to get in here and check eMail and such before diving into the Werewolf. Once there I know I'll be a while poking around and checking it out.
