Looks like for some reason X is failing to start. I would try some boot options to use VESA mode or a lower resolution or something. It's possible the new Toshiba contains hardware that doesn't have a driver in whatever version of PCLinux you're using.

Are there any error messages that you can see before you get the login prompt? If you can, post them here. As has been mentioned, it's probably just that X (your GUI) is having problems.

Welcome to LQ.

Did you use the latest cd = PCLinuxOS 2010.1 ? ?

I'd guess, it's a monitor issue.

Boot Live cd : F3 : select Text / 640x480 / 800x600
Or just select : Video safe mode - VESA
... as already said in post #2.

Thanks

#1 - No error messages
#2 - I tried Ubuntu a few weeks ago and it would not load either.
#3 - I down loaded the ISO & burned it just before I tried it, actually, I tried 2 CD's and a DVD.
I should get a chance again tomorrow to get at it, I"ll try the F3 tip.
Thanks again

No updates yet, as I mentioned - I won't be able to get to her computer until tomorrow if not next week.
