PCI Express Graphics Card and /dev/agpgart (AGP Support) (Gentoo)
 

Hi,

I am new to linux kernel. I recently installed Gentoo on my PC and want to recompile the kernel for optimization.

The video card I am using is a Intel 945 PCIE. I am wondering if I should enable /dev/agpgart (AGP Support) support in my kernel? It seems like if I don't install it, I will not be able to use some advanced graphical features. But my video card is a PCIE rather than a AGP.

Even though, my intel graphics card is not listed in the /dev/agpgart list.

Should I included in it?

Hi,

Optimization of a kernel to suit your processor is not going to gain you that much. Kernel size might gain you some load time that will not be that noticeable.

I've look around some, but it is not completely clear whether agp support is needed for PCIE. I would think not, they are two completely different interfaces with no real relation to one another. Also, I have a nvidia PCIE card and I recently built a kernel with AGP support completely taken out. There was no change in performance. So, I think it's not necessary, but I have to tell you that it's quite difficult to disable it, you have to disable lots of other stuff to be able to turn it off.
