Patching the kernel

if you got source of kernel 2.6.12.5

There are two patches : patch-2.6.13 from 28-Aug-2005 and

patch-2.6.13.1 from 09-Sep-2005

Do you have to apply both patches or only the latest ?

I think there is valuable bug fixes in the old version and may be they don't present in the newer one, I wil check the Changelogs ;]

Just try to apply both, if it prints errors, try something else.

BTW: Do you really need a 2.6.13 kernel? I think a 2.6.12 kernel is new enough.

I think you have to undo 2.6.12.5 to 2.6.12 (using patch -R), and then apply 2.6.13 (and optionally 2.6.13.1).

This means you (probably) have to download 5 other patches (2.6.12.1 to 2.6.12.5), so maybe you should consider downloading the full source for 2.6.13.

Wise man say: "Computer software like fine wine ... let it age!"

IBM once released a boner update to VM/SP which caused the system to be un-bootable. And it wasn't like you could just stick a live-CD into the machine and get it started that way... if you applied that update, you were hosed. The IBM rep called up in a panic. But the tape was still on the shelf .. along with two updates earlier than this one .. and I simply used it as a scratch-tape. We were running three service-levels back.

If you see a specific, highly-pervasive problem that must be addressed in a particular update, then go ahead and apply that update. Otherwise don't bother. At "the bleeding edge," it pays to let someone else take the painful cuts for you. :)

:)

Thnkx people for the good advises , i considered to download the entire src - 2.6.13 and to load my cfg from 2.6.12.5 if this cfg don't match [fit] i will reconfigure it manually :)

Keep a copy of your current configuration for every kernel release you use or have used. For a maintenance-release such as this one, you can probably use the old config unchanged, although as a matter of principle you should review it, and save a new copy of it (even if identical to the old).

Of course

:) I used my Drck.cfg from he 2.6.12.5 kernel and Loaded it for the 2.6.1.13.1 kerel :) Everything is alright :)

But i'm wandering ... To stay with 2.4.29 as slackware 10.1 comes with it OR to compile 2.6.13.1

I think Volkerding know good why he involved 2.4.29

What do you think ?
