Question PATA on Promise SX2 - New to Linux

Alright, here are my system specs:

Asus SK8N
Opteron 140
1gb Memory
ATI 9600

Want to use: Debian Linux Pure64

Is there a way to enable PATA on the (Promise?) SX2 SATA controller for Debian Pure64 64-bit LinuxOS? I've researched but have come up with no conclusive answers as some of the technical aspects are bewildering.

I've run into:
use libata with patch.
Gentoo 5.0 should do it.
It's not supported.
Kernel 2.6.11 should do it.
Patch kernel.
Create my own bootdisk.
All the above.

Or: SUFFER.

Also posting in the Debian section.

Many thanks to those who reply

I am having the same issue, though it is a curiosity for me... Here are some links:

Prelimiary support appears to be there:
http://linux.yyz.us/sata/sata-status.html#tx2

Apparently someone has submitted a patch:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=147303

Someone claiming to have it working:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=154619

I would say a kernel driver patch is the correct answer.

I am trying to duplicate their efforts. I will re-post if I succeed!
