There are plugins for MySQL (e.g.) that permit LDAP to be used for authentication. One such plugin is sold as part of the MySQL commercial product, but there are others.

It is also a good idea to restrict the authentication that is used by the script to a particular identity used only by that script, and to restrict it to the one IP-address that is known to be used by that script.

One potential soln to the orig qn is to reverse the logic (sort of) ie have the DB do its own backup, then scp via ssh-key to the backup server.It should be easier to lock down the db server that way.
Also of course use ssh cfg options so the backup server only accepts that key pair cxn from a given user + ip address.
