Thumbs down passwords getting me down

I have to be honest, since I'm nearly 75 now I'm not as Quick as I once was. I was doing fine with ubuntu--turn it on and go to firefox. Browse.Suddenly one day I am asked to Log in. Go back and look for passwords, etc., but they don't work. I can't get in.
Finally, I decide to reinstall...problems, but bang! It begins to install earlier Ubuntu.
Reistalling everything...works ok but it has beentaken over by Google. I have no Navigation toolbar,--Well, to be brief; I don't understand most of the questions I find here-much less the answers, so shall I once again try to change the password for the synaptic thing or what?
Sorry to be so unscirntific but none tf the passwords seem to work no matter how carefully I write them down AND execute them.
