I'm a novice, registered for a beginner's course in LINUX. I have been given a rather old computer with LINUX installed ( red hat probably.) Doner has forgotten the password and could not remember how to log on. I know nothing but need to log on, reinstall LINUX, partition, etc.

Any suggestions.

First of all, if you are just going to erase the system and install new stuff on it, you don't need to log in.

If you need to log in to the existing system, you can give the "single" boot option in the boot loader or something like that. See this page for details:
