password malfunction

Hi, I went to reset my password in root and although I got to the username/password line and entered my new password twice it responded with password unchanged.
I tried again with a different password and again got password unchanged.

Now my old password fails as well.

how can i get root to accept a new password please.

actions taken: Recovery mode, root, mount -o rw, remount / passwd username

entered password then confirmed.

password unchanged.
Thanks

arranskye,

You are heading in the right direction. The shadow file needs amending.
