Please help...I just installed ubuntu breezy and for some reason I cannot login with the username and password. I booted to the recovery console and am now sitting at:
\root@ubuntuirv:~#
What do I have to do. Please be gentle..

You probably just mistyped the password when initially setting up the account. So it's not currently set to what you think it is.

You're sitting at a "root" prompt after booting in recovery mode, so guessing that your username for the account that's broken is "patie", try this:
Code:
passwd patie
It should prompt you for a new password that you'll have to enter identically twice, for confirmation. I'm not sure what runlevel Ubuntu normally boots to, if it happens to be runlevel two you would then type "telinit 2". If you don't know the default runlevel, just type "reboot" and that will be good enough.

If you mistyped the username rather than the password when you originally installed the system, you can just add a new (corrected) user account with:
Code:
adduser patie
(Again, assuming "patie" is the username you want to add.) Then "telinit 2" or "reboot" as needed.
