password authentification problem

i have been using Ubuntu since last one year, after I upgraded to ubuntu11.10, I am [COLOR="Red"]able to log in with my password, but if I have to use synaptic package manager or make any changes my password is not authenticated. and does not allow me anything. how do I reset my password if that is what is required, how do I settle this issue, because of this issue I am not even able to reinstall the OS

Hello,

Are you talking about your normal user password, or your root password? Are you trying to use sudo? Please answer these questions, as it will aid in troubleshooting.

Cheers,

Josh

and thank you for respondiing,I think root password was OK that is the reason I could login, i tried to use sudo on terminal but my password was not recognised. then I used terminal and typed at the prompt~$passwd <username> (example if my username is 'roxy, I typed passwd roxy and pressed enter. the rest of it I kept doing what it told me, it kept telling meto give a longer new password, because my earlier password had only 4 characters. Now when I have changed my password to 9 characters, everything is smooth. Maybe not recognizing smaller passwords is the tight security glitch with Ubuntu, 11.10
