Partiton sizes on a 128 GB SSD
So I'm building a new computer that uses a 128 GB SSD as its main drive. I wan't to dual boot Windows and Kunbuntu, but am obviously limited in space. As this will be my first Linux install, I'm not sure how much room it will need. I expect the Windows partition will require the most space since that will be for gaming. Other than the windows main partition, what partitions and how big do you all think I should make given a 128 GB SSD? Full system specs below for reference:
CPU: Core i7 920 RAM: 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel GPU: Nvidia GTX 260 Mobo: Gigabyte EX58 Extreme Storage: G. Skill 128 GB SATA SSD, 2 TB External storage (USB) Oprical: Blu-ray combo drive Oh and how is Blu-Ray playback in Linux / Kunbuntu ? |
With that much RAM you won't need much of a swap partition---1 gig would be more than plenty. I normally do about 10 gig for a root file system which is adequate for all of the software, and for a desktop the rest is a home partition. So, I'd recommend:
1 G /swap 10 G /root the rest /home Some people like a separate /boot in case things go wrong, but I normally don't bother---a knoppix cd can fix boot issues. I think servers often do separate /var and /tmp, but I don't see the need for desktop purposes. |
