Partitions
 

Hi,

I am a linux newbie as you can tell what forum I posted in. My friend and I got linux RedHat 7.1 installed last night. It is on a 30 gig HD. My main goal with linux is to learn about the web capabilities such as web serving, ftp, news, email etc. I have 3 partitions on my Linux drive. One for te native, one for swap and then the storage. As most of you prolly know, Windows cant see linux partitions at all, but Linux can see Windows partitions. Is there a way that I can make Windows (winamp etc. etc.) see my storage partition on my linux drive, where I can access it in either OS without an problems? Help!!! If so, I need lots of help prolly doing it. Which reminds me, someone recommended to me to format my storage partition to FAT32? How might I do this without kiboshing my linux. In recap, I would like to be able to serve my mp3s from linux, but be able to play them from Windows also.

www.samba.org is one place you need to look. With 'samba' you can create windows shares from your linux box and it doesn't matter if it's vfat or ext2 partitions. I currently run a windows98 box and an RedHat 7.1 box at home, networked, firewalled, and running samba. I can share my linux files and windows files between the boxes, write cd's from my linux box to my windows cdrw (because my cdrw is not supported on linux), etc.. So look into 'samba', you can also find docs on it at www.linuxdoc.org and you can get docs for the Apache webserver at www.apache.org. Hope this helps.

OK, I don't know if this matters with samba, but my Linux drive and my Windows Drive is in the same computer. 2 seperate HDs. Windows Drive 40 Gigs and my Linux 30 Gigs.

if you got them on the same computer or hard drive.. don't know of any way to load winamp in windows to see your linux partitions and read the mp3 or whatever from there. not sure if that is gonna happen for you.....

I personally haven't heard of any programs that windows will run to read from a linux partition using the same machine. you can do a search maybe on http://sourceforge.net or www.linuxapps.com ...etc... now samba would work if they were on a network, or you can always load linux to play them, or you can read the files from within Linux from the Windows partitions.

Yeah, Trickykid is right. Even if you make the partition FAT32 on the linux drive it won't matter, because the partition won't be activated until you activate Linux (by logging into it). If your dual-booting you either boot the Windows drive or the Linux drive, not both. Find an old 486 or 586 and put the Linux drive in that and network them. Probably wouldn't cost as much as that 40Gb drive.

I'm not sure this is right. If you partition your drives and make a fat32 partition only for data storage, for example mp3, then both windows and linux should be able to reach them.
Activating/initializing the hard drives is a task performed by BIOS and are not the OS. Only make sure to make a separate partition for your data on either of your disks.
Because of filepermissions and security only store data files on a fat32, as it doesn't have any security at all. I don't know how linux would handle a linux exacutable on a fat32 partition.
