Partitions

Ok another dumb question probably. I had windows 98 installed on my hard drive. I wanted to put red hat 8.0 on it as well. I need to partition the hard drive right? When I booted from the red hat cd it asked me about partitions and stuff and I wanted it to do it for me. Well it said it couldn't do it for some reason and I decided to put linux on my system over windows. Is it possible to partition the hard drive now after I only have linux on it and install windows on the other partition?

You should be able to. Just make sure that you partition in the right place(i.e. not over a linux partition that would screw up linux)

I thinks its easier if you use 2 hds though..

sorry I can't be more specific...I don't know how red hat installs

Only have one hard drive, but thanks for trying.

Okay, easy to do with one hard drive. The absolute easiest way is to use Win98 fdisk to make two partitions. Load Win98 on the first partition. Load Red Hat on the second. Put the Grub or LILO boot loader in the MBR and it should work fine.

For the detailed instructions, go to the source:

https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

If you haven't registered with them, you might be asked to do that first--no cost, just give them a user name and password. When you get the list of manuals, you want the 8.0 section, "x86 Installation Guide"

There are three flavors--pick your poison and go to Appendix G (page 121) and follow the yellow brick road!

Enjoy
