partition sizes - fedora core 3

I've just installed FC3 on my 10GB hard drive. The auto-matic partitioning in the setup was throwing some errors so i read some linux 101 guides online and decided to partition as follows.

200MB - /boot
400MB - /
1GB - swap
8.5GB - /usr

once i had it up and running i started up2date and went to watch some TV.
I came back about 20 minutes later to find up2date frozen and my / partition is completely full.
Was the partitioning guide i read before wrong or did i miss something?

With a 10GB hard drive how should my partitions be set up?

(i plan on using it as a development environment running apache, mysql, php... if that makes a difference)

thanks in advance.

you only need 3 partitions

1 for /boot
1 for your system install
and 1 for swap

For a 10GB Desktop system I would do:

/500MB swap
/ 4GB
/home --the rest

Your programs will get installed on /, so 4GB will probably be enough if you just throw on some development software adn don't plan on making it a robust mutimedia machine. Don't install stuff that you don't need, e.g., only install 1 desktop environment (although the libraries from the other might be helpful).
