partition help?
 

I've gotten slack 9.1 installed and it all seems to work well enough.I was curious about my partition scheme though:

Primary W95 FAT32 8899 MB
Primary Linux swap 509 MB
Primary Linux ReiserFS 10585 MB

Is that a reasonable scheme?Or is there a better way to work it?Thx in advance.

You only have one Linux file system except the swap and that will suffice, although a lot of people prefer to use multiple partitions. You can have one for /home, one for /var and so on. This practice is usually encouraged since it is considered more secure and easier to back up, but for a home system only one Linux filesystem will do.

im a newbie going to install linux soon.

it looks fine to me but i could be wrong. i was going to partition the same way u did, one swap and the other linux.

but now im thinking of having a home partition and a fat32 so i can swap files between xp and linux. my xp is ntfs so it may give probs.

i think i read a home part will be good because if i want to try a different linux distro i wont loose my work. not that i will try another distro.
but u never know.

whats the /var partition used for ?

Yes, a FAT32 partition that both Windows and Linux can read and write to without problems isn't a bad idea on dual-boot machines.

The /var partition is used for stuff that change a lot - like logs, HTML content and temporary files.
