Partition and IRC question
 

Hi guys, newbie here. I decided to get better with Ubuntu/Linux that I would install a version and dual boot. Basically, force myself to work with it on a daily basis and work through the headaches.

Anyway, I had Windows 7 installed and installed Ubuntu after that. However, I used GPart first to shrink my partition size that Windows was on. During this process, which took 2 hours, it finally errored out before finishing asking me if I wanted to restart the process. I didn't so I just exited and restarted the computer. I had to run CHKDSK before WIndows booted up and then I checked Disk Manager. The partition was resized to what I wanted GPart to do. So I guess it worked... not sure why it errored out. Anyway, I installed Ubuntu afterwards. It is now up and running in a dual boot environment.

My questions is should I be worried about the error during partition shrinking? Could I have a corrupted install of Ubuntu? So far everything seems to be running fine, although, I do get random GPU errors and messages asking if I want to send reports or debug. I am not forced to restart or do anything else.

Second, I used to use mIRC years back and wondering how I would get that installed on Ubuntu 12.10. I did some searching around and I had to go to the Software Center. I did that and found XChat. I had it install but am not sure how to find it now lol... It was on my left side ribbon bar but after a restart Ubuntu gave me a program error and had me restart. I did and now the icon is gone and I don't know how to find the program. Should I be using another IRC client or how do I get it to run? Reason being is that I like joining channels and asking questions. With my WIndows install I have mIRC and am able to join a #ubuntu channel. I'd like to obvouisly do this from my ubuntu install so I can ask questions with the OS in front of me.

please post the errormessages, this will help us a lot to understand your problem. As of the problem with gparted, as long as Windows starts properly, don't worry.

As for XChat, open a terminal and start the programm from there, if it does not work you will get very helpful errormessages in the terminal, please post them too.

How exactly do I open a terminal? Sorry, I am very new to this. I did use the software center to find Smuxi. That IRC client is working for me and I am in the ubuntu channel now.

A terminal is similar to the dosshell in Windows, there should be an icon like a computermonitor or similar. In the terminal simply type the word xchat and then enter.
