Can I partition my Linux drive with boot magic from windows XP. Will it have any affect on my Linux installment ?

Also I have red hat linux 9 does mandrake have better features ? Why isn't mandrake sold in stores like linux red hat ?

You don't have to make a partition for linux before you install it. Just leave some free space on your drive and you can create partitions for linux when you install it.

Are you trying to dual-boot your computer with linux and windows XP?

If you have windows XP installed on the system, try right-click on "My Computer" -> "Manage" -> there is a section that let you see the condition of your hard disk but I forgot what the name is that... it should not be hard to find, though... then look into your hard disk to see if there is any free space left. If there is no free space, you should consider resizing your windows partition by using partition magic or any other tools that allow you to do that.

I have 2 drives one with WIndows XP and one with Linux.

Wha??? Dude, you most definitely need to have a partition available to install Linux into.

Paragon - if XP came pre-installed on your machine, more likely than not, it is occupying 100% of your disk. Unless you installed XP yourself, the factory install of XP would allocate the entire drive as a single partition, and Windows would occupy the entire disk.

If you want to dual boot, then you need to create a separate partition allocated to Linux. If you've got a single drive, with plenty of space on it, and want to give (for instance) half of it to Windows and half to Linux, my recommendation would be to first do a scandisk, then a defrag under XP. The purpose of this exercise would be to maximize the amount of contiguous space that would be available to allocate to Linux. Then, using whichever partititoning tool you prefer, you would need to create the new partition. Reboot after this step, just to verify that Windows is happy. Following that, you'd have an unused partition to install Linux into, so drop the distro CD of your choice into the CD-RW, and fire it up.

Paragon -- let's start over. What are you trying to do, exactly? In post #1, it seems like you have a machine with XP installed, and you want to install Linux. I interpret this post to be a question about how to set up a dual-boot system.

In post #6 though, it seems you want to overwrite your Linux partition with Windows 98, and that "XP has nothing to do with this", so maybe what you really want to try to do is set up a dual-boot between XP and Windows 98, while getting rid of Linux????? Or are you saying you want to triple-boot, with XP, and have your Linux and Windows 98 partitions share a drive?

Sorry bro, you lost me. I don't understand your question. Maybe if you described the system layout you have now, and then also describe the final layout you'd like to have, it might make things clear. Right now though, at least for me, I have no idea what your question is. Sorry. -- J.W.

This is just my personal interpretaion:

I suppose that you now have a system running Windows XP and linux, with each OS resides in one independent drive. Then you want to add Windows 98 on the second drive, which linux resides in. After that, you want to use boot magic to multi-boot your system to run Windows XP, Windows 98 and Redhat Linux 9.

And your question is: if you are going to delete a partition of linux to give way to Windows 98, which partition would it be.

Am I correct?

*But personally I think that it is really a bad idea to remove a partition from linux...
