For what distro? Ubuntu? To answer your question assuming Ubuntu, just type
Code:
man dpkg
and you'll get your answer.
Is there any reason to use dpkg rather than aptitude or apt-get?

Thanks,
No problem. I assume you are running Testing (Wheezy) and not stable (Squeeze). I also assume your sources.list file is set up properly. Is that correct? If so then, you can use aptitude or apt-get to do that. You don't use dpkg for that kind of thing.
Open a terminal and as root enter this command:
Code:
aptitude update && aptitude install amanda-server
or else
Code:
aptitude update && aptitude install safe-upgrade
and that will upgrade your installed packages to the current version.
That's it.
ciao,
jdk
