I am running Ubuntu Karmic and have been getting this error message when attempting to update.
Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:

'E:Type ‘sudo’ is not known on line 14 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

Can anyone kindly assist as being fairly new to Linux I am quite sure I have made a major error by tinkering too much.

Can you post your etc/apt/sources.list? The error message says it found the term "sudo" in the sources list, which is certainly at least one problem.
