overwhelming linux!!!

Im a linux newbie!. Im having a hard time w/ your OS :-) I have a questions i hope it will be ok to post all here once.

Im using fedora core 1. I installed it successfully and encounter no problems w/ the hardware. I installed it as a workstation.

Which is easier to use: Gnome or KDE?

In Gnome desktop, when I minimize a window, it disappear. I cannot see it in the taskbar or do you call it the panel.

In KDE. I play w/ it, now, How can I restore back the menu bar in the Konqueror file manager? It disappear when I click a certain menu item. And lastly, Konqueror didnt save it window state (size, minimize/maximize). How do it?

How can I set-up PPP connection to access the internet? But first how and where can I install a modem?

Thats all. I will deeply appreaciate all the help you will give you guys!

Maybe you don't have the right applet running:
1. right click on the panel where you want the window list to display
2. choose "add to panel -> utility -> window list
3. if you want to add another panel, right click on an existing one and choose "new panel", then drag it where you want

What kind of modem do you have?
External analog? should already be ok
Internal winmodem? Give (as root) lspci and look for an entry saying "communication device" or similar
DSL/USB? google for the model/manufacturer + linux

KDE is more similar to win. Still I prefer Gnome, and OpenOffice, which is a must if you want to read/write msoffice files, runs much better on gnome.

For a default Window state in File management "mode" simply

Settings
Save view profile file management
Save window size in profile (click the tick box at bottom of dialogue)
Save as filemanagement (ie just save-over same name)

each directory you now open in file management mode will have those chosen settings.

also

To customise the Window state for any single directory use:

Settings
Click on - View properties saved in directory
make your Window state changes
then simply
Settings
Click off - View properties saved in directory

each time you open that directory it will be exactly as you set up.

Skyline,

How about that to restore the menu bar for each Konqueror window? :-)

Skyline 01-18-2004 08:49 AM

Simply use

ctrl + m

to toggle the menu bar on or off - once you've toggled on - then simply save the Window state with

Settings
Save view profile file management
Save window size in profile (click the tick box at bottom of dialogue)
Save as filemanagement (ie just save-over same name)

Easy.........
