outgoing messages met with error in maillog: connection refused by [127.0.0.1]

hi all:

im incredibly new to the linux world and am setting up first web/email server. using sendmail to be main email server. I have gotten incoming messages to go to the correct user's mailbox, however outgoing meets the following from maillog:

Apr 22 09:51:03 localhost sendmail[21826]: m3MGp3JG021824: to=<recipient1@gmail.com>,<recipient2@gnaps.com>,<recipient3@gnaps.com>, ctladdr=<root@localhost.localdomain> (0/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=180336, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection refused by [127.0.0.1]

now i don't know enough to be able to decipher the log completely... any help is appreciated

what i have done:

changed permissions on clientmqueue to be more lenient, to no avail.

the plan:

trying to get sendmail operational with plans for dovecot as pop3.

much obliged
