Question outbound firewall needed, opensuse 10.3

Hi everyone

I was impressed by security of linux and installed it.

But I have a doubt regarding its firewall. In yast it says that susefirewall is running and my router is configured in the external zone,

But susefirewall doesn't ask me a single question when an application tries to connect to internet.

I downloaded firestarter and installed it but was not able to figure out how to launch it.

And what is apparmour.

I was wondering if there is a Moron's Guide To Linux

And please tolerate my stupid questions .

Thanks

The firewalls in Linux, Unix and related OSes don't operate like ZoneAlarm or Comodo on Windows, so you won't get some sort of pop up box asking you if an app should connect to the internet. If susfirewall2 is running, it can be configured by running YAST (Administrator Settings) -> Security & Users -> Firewall. You can then configure which services should be allowed to connect to your box from other local machines or the web.

1.You should be able to start Firestarter from terminal if you can't see any icon in your main menu, just type firestarter and press enter,if asked for the root password, type it.It would be a good thing to disable your built in firewall then.
2.AppArmor gives you network application security via mandatory access control for programs, protecting against the exploitation of software flaws and compromised systems. AppArmor includes everything you need to provide effective containment for programs (including those that run as root) to thwart attempted exploits and even zero-day attacks. AppArmor offers an advanced toolset that largely automates the development of per-program application security so that no new expertise is required. Best of all, AppArmor provides all this at zero-cost software licensing. You can configure AppArmor in any way you like.
3.Don't think of yourself as a moron just because you don't know much about Linux, nobody was born knowing Linux.I suggest you to visit this site http://www.reallylinux.com/ and then move on.Here on the LQ you can find many great tutorials, links etc. about Linux, just search.
