Orinoco 802.11b Mandrake Setup

Totally new to Linux, but eager to learn. Loaded 8.1 on a Dell CPi and have basic email, Internet connection and web server running on a four system LAN/Linksys wireless router, using a 3com wired NIC. I have done some RTFMing, but not enough.

I'm trying to install an Orinoco Silver wireless PC card, along with the latest drivers. The Orinoco readme got me as far as downloading & extracting the driver archive and the latest PCMCIA package from sourceforge.

The Ori instructions specify a make config to /usr/src/linux. My /usr/src directory only contains rpms. I know I'll need help with the build & install, but I can't get past the make. Web searches haven't helped much.

I am using this card and a Linksys with the router now on 98 & W2K, so I understand WEP, SSID and the like. I set the router to defaults to try to use the native Mandy setup, but it would not work. Figured I'd try the latest install at the same time as setup.

KDE Control center see the card as a WAVELAN, so it's mostly there, although the X Network configurator does not list the WAVELAN card in the pick list.

In simple, one or two syllable words, where do I go from here?

Thanks.

I got it. For anyone who is interested, I did not have the kernel source loaded. I reloaded Mandrake in expert mode and got the Linux and Linux-2.4.8 directories. I followed the Orinoco driver install instructions, and although it did the make and make dep, it choked on the ./Build and ./Install. Netconf and reboot - now it's working with no WEP. If anyone knows the file I need to edit for the WEP key, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

There's no file you need to modify for the wep key. Also know that anyone that wants to snoop on your w-lan, regardless of WEP, can. Airsnort and a number of other utuilities can sniff a key within minutes... but that's just me going on about how stinky WEP is.

Hopefully you've got the orinoco driver to work properly. If you can ifconfig up the device, you should be golden. I've had a lot of luck with Mandy 8.0 and wireless gear.

iwconfig is the name of the utility to manipulate the key, the essid, the channel, the mode, whether you're using, blah blah blah. Basically, open a terminal, and man iwconfig. That should be everything you need to know.

Cheers,

Finegan

Its on the Mandrake CD, under RPMS, should be called wireless-tools-0.20.rpm or something along that version number. If you use one of the package installers, just search for wireless.

Cheers,
