Order of applying patches
 

I want to apply a patch(s) to 2.4.23-28.9SMP.

I know that I have to apply patches incrementally, but what is the rule when doing this?

For example, if I am starting with 2.4.23 can I apply 2.5.0 or do I have to apply 2.4.25, 2.4.26, 2.4.27, ... or can I apply the next patch which would be 2.5.0 and then 2.6.0?:Pengy:

mmm, you can apply the patches only if is more recent, if you have 2.4.23 you can apply the patch 2.5 or 2.6

If you have 2.4.23 you need to apply 2.4.24 . If you are talking about going to kernel 2.6.0 you need to compile it from scratch. There is no way to "patch" from 2.4.xx to 2.6.0.

I don't get what you mean by 2.5 or 2.4.27 . Are there some new kernels that I don't know about? :)

Thanks WhiteHat and Romano, WhiteHat, I ask about the 2.4.23 and on because I am looking at an ftp site that has all the patches for 2.5 through 2.6 and there are literally, dozens of them. I think in the 2.5 folder there is 75 patches.

I think I understand you that you should apply all patches in order that you find them but does that mean when I reach the end of the patch, e.g, 2.4.74 and the next one is 2.5.0 that I have to recompile the kernel because its no
longer just a patch and is now a new kernel?

Yes. You cannot patch from 2.4 kernel to 2.6 kernel.
