Oracle VirtualBox on Kali Sana Linux

I have been trying to install Oracle VirtualBox on Kali version Sana to no avail?
Initially I tried the download from Oracle VB and the prescribed install steps, After many errors I tried the Kali Linux prepackaged download and same results.
Also, I referenced many blogs that didn't help either.
However, it does seem that others have been successful.
What is the secret sauce????

You could start by posting some of the errors here rather than assuming we are all very experienced Linux administrators with years of penetration testing experience as you, obviously, are.
http://docs.kali.org/introduction/sh...use-kali-linux
That overwith isn't Kali more suited to be a guest than a host OS?
My apologies if you're a Linux guru tackling something I don't understand.

VB on Kali errors

When I try to start Virtual Box I get 'Kernel driver not installed (rc=1908)'
' The Virtual Box Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there
is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Pleas reinstall the kernel module
by executing '/sbin/rcvboxdrv setup'

When I execute I get 'bash: sbin/rcvboxdrv: no such file or directory'

You likely need to install the kernel source or, at least, the kernel headers though I have to ask why you didn't know that?
Edit: you will know better than me but is DKMS supported in Kali? Something like that ought to do the trick more easily.

Hey 273,

I really do appreciate your help~!
This is A NEWBIE forum and asking 'why someone doesn't know something' sets you apart
from the rest of the helpful pack~!
Also, yes great assist in pointing out that the error states that I need to reinstall the kernel, too.
Additionally, dkms is supported in Kali and again many grateful thanks for your esteemed wisdom.

So why are you, a knowledgeable Linux user and penetration-testing professional posting in the newbie forum?
http://docs.kali.org/introduction/sh...use-kali-linux
As I mentioned above, perhaps you ought to ask why you are trying to run a virtual machine under Kali, whether you ought to and, ultimately, what it is you are trying to achieve here?
My apologies but you must be the thousandth person to ask "how do I ... under Kali" without taking the time to actually learn what Kali is, what it is for and how it is used.

Seriously, why do so many newbies here try to use Kali as a normal every-day OS? That's not what it's for, at all. Install a regular distro for your normal OS, stick Kali on a bootable USB drive or VM, and only boot it up when you need to do penetration testing.

I'd attempt to look into it but I am too busy working out why nobody on an embedded Linux forum will help me with my problem using a thermal lance to solder an LED to my Raspberry Pi.

Dear 273,

Again, Thank you very much for your seasoned insight~!
No response does actually say a lot......

Allow me to venture a wild guess (aka, "state the obvious")...

First, they do not arrive at Kali based on a search for "Newbie friendly Linux".

They arrive at Kali because it offers something special that they are actually after, not offered by the many truly newbie friendly Linuces.

There is only one "thing" that Kali offers, ergo, that must be what they really want.

So, while they cry newbie tears and pretend ignorant innocence, many if not most of them actually intend to (mis)use those kewl tewls that Kali includes, for their own ends, oblivious to the knowledge and moral code required to do so!

OK, granted, 273 has a tendency to be snarky. But in this case I think it may actually be deserved.

Look, I know that kali on metal has its uses, as does running VMs in it. Kali also works well from inside a VM for other things, and it has its uses as a live DVD. I personally use it all 3 ways.

Do I have kali on metal? Yes. Do I run VMs in it? Yes. Is it my everyday box? *Hell NO!* It's not suited for day to day use. It's on a dedicated box. And I have my reasons for setting it that way.

The "secret sauce" that you're missing is experience; which is what 273 is trying to tell you.

What you're trying to do is the equivalent of rebuild an engine when you've never even done a tune up before.

Do you have any idea how much kernel hacking I had to do and how many hours of research, head banging and teeth gnashing I had to do to get it to work? Of course not; which is the point.

You might as well try brain surgery on your first day of med school.

Come back and ask for more help after you can install the tool chain and headers, compile a custom kernel and persistently load custom kernel modules and drivers b/c then you'll not only know enough to ask intelligent / pertinent questions but I'll be able to answer them w/o writing a master's thesis on *nix administration.

You have to walk before you can fly. Nature's rule, Daniel-san, not mine.

Sorry, yes, and many thanks for a reasoned and polite reply.
Again, sorry, yes, the "I'm trying to decorate my car using a Barrett M82..." questions do annoy me more than they ought to.

OK, granted, 273 has a tendency to be snarky.

not the only one

i am also

but Kali is a os for PROFESSIONALS in pen testing and covert ops
the target user is someone with a masters or working on one in computer science and network security

the type of person that dose really have Nightmares and bad dreams about computer networks
( no really in bed and having bad dreams )

installing a VM on kali is like putting a trailer hitch on your porsche 911 and use it to haul a 40 ft boat

not something one really dose

but a new not used VM is a great way to keep things separate and remove ones digital fingerprint on a network

they have a use

BUT

if one has to ask about basic computer skills then kali is NOT a good choice for you

Steven_G a question
i am taking a guess here
kvm is what you are using ? right and not oracle ( security concerns about oracle )

Psst, John VV, I think you're confusing your posters there... ;)
